The Four Square Game - 11/03/06

Skit Synopsis

During recess an altercation occurs on the Four Square Court.

What is the problem?

11-03-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Steve got to the 4 square first and John is mad because John wanted to be the server but Steve got to the spot first. Janisel

The problem is that Steve is always the server and he won't let any one else be the server. Mason

11-03-06: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Steve keeps hogging the ball and being really bossy. Jessica

11-03-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think that in the second part it is a different problem because in the first part the problem is John wants to be the server first instead of Steve. In the second part the problem is that John thought the ball was on the line but Megan said John was out because he missed the ball and it wasn't on the line, it was out. Courtney

What could someone do differently?

11-03-06: Halifax Elementary School • Grade 5 • Halifax, Massachusetts:
I think someone else should be the server because Steve got to go the first time and now someone else should go like John. Patrick

I think if he doesn’t like the rules when they are playing four square he should go find another game to play. Or he could go play with his other friends. Or John could make new friends! Alicia

11-03-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think that John should take his ball and leave if the kids don't cooperate with him. Elena

11-03-06: Halifax Elementary School • Grade 5 • Halifax, Massachusetts:
I think that if he doesn’t like the rules he shouldn’t play four square or he could play another game with another friend or he could meet some new friends and he could ask them if he could play. John could just get along and play nice or they all could make new rules so everyone could play four square. Katelyn

11-03-06: Rising Tide Charter School • Grade 5/6 • Plymouth, Massachusetts:
I think that I would just leave and let them deal with it. Besides it doesn't matter who serves. John should just stop being a jerk!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Angela

11-03-06: St. Stephens Elementary School • Grade 5• Conover, North Carolina:
I think that John shouldn't have yelled at his friends at all. Steve and the two other girls should have just left when John started yelling at them. John should have just gone with the line foul and everything would have just have been fine. Jimmy

I think that John should have asked nicely if he could serve, or he could take turns with the others. Jacob

11-03-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think that Steve shouldn't be able to be the server every game because it doesn't give anybody else a chance. But I also don't think that John should have stormed off with the ball. Daniela

11-03-06: Rising Tide Charter School • Grade 5/6 • Plymouth, Massachusetts:
I think John should be the server. Nick

Steve should stop being bossy. I think that if Steve is going to be bossy they should start a new game and they should say to him if he is going to be bossy he can’t play. Natalie

How could the situation be helped?

11-03-06: Halifax Elementary School • Grade 5 • Halifax, Massachusetts:
I think someone else should be the server because Steve got to go the first time and now someone else should go like John. Anonymous

11-03-06: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that John should know how to play the game before getting into a problem because he is going against the other people when he does something wrong. Anonymous

I think that Steve has to let other people be server because the day before he was first. If Steve and John don't agree they should play ro, chan, bo which means rock, paper, scissors, shu. Nelsmarie

11-03-06: Rising Tide Charter School • Grade 5/6 • Plymouth, Massachusetts:
Steve should be a little nicer than he was being. Alyssa

I think Steven should take turns. Meghan

I think that Steve should have let have let someone go first because he went first the day before. Natalie

11-03-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think that John should just play by the rules. I also think that Steve could let other people have turns and not just have rules for who gets there first. Michael

I think that the boys should just get along. Alina

I think that Steve should be server for the first half of recess and John should be the server for the second half of recess because John had to go get the ball so he didn't have time to call server. Elena

11-03-06: St. Stephens Elementary School • Grade 5• Conover, North Carolina:
I think that since Steve was it yesterday, John could be it and take turns. This would be fair in my opinion. If this doesn't work they should consult a teacher or coach for advice. Callie

I think that Steve should have asked if he could serve the ball. John should not have changed the rules without asking the other players. If they both just started playing they would have never had that fight. Jimmy

11-03-06: Halifax Elementary School • Grade 5 • Halifax, Massachusetts:
I think if he didn't like the rules they should change the rules a little. Anonymous

11-03-06: Vine Street Community Center • Grade 5-6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think it should be a first come first serve. Jamille

What might improve things for another day?

11-03-06: St. Stephens Elementary School • Grade 5• Conover, North Carolina:
I think that a way they can solve the problem is that they can have an adult watch them play that knows the rules to make the game go smooth and stop calling John names about being a sore loser. DJ

I think that if you asked a teacher to help it would be a lot better. I think that the people wanting to play should take it to a teacher, and have he/she decide what should be done about the problem. Then they couldn't complain about someone being unfair if that happened. Anna

I think that they should take turns or they could ask a teacher what the rules are but they should possibly switch off like one day one be the server and the next day another and follow that pattern. Austin

11-03-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think that Steve should go to John and ask him if he wants to be server the next day instead of him. James

11-03-06: Halifax Elementary School • Grade 5 • Halifax, Massachusetts:
I think that he should see what happens the next day, and if he still doesn’t think the rules are fair he should play another game with some more friends so he will have fun with friends that give him turns at their game. Sarah
