Crowded Cafeteria - 10/20/06

Skit Synopsis

Jez, a new girl in school, is walking into the cafeteria with a classmate, Stacy. They are looking for a place to sit down and eat lunch, when Kate and Christie call them over to sit with them.

What is the problem?

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
Well, I think the problem is that Stacy got the wrong impression because her friends had to go home because Stacy was taking a long time after school. Jadeline

I think the problem was that Stacy thought that her friends left her so she won't talk to Kate or Christie. Mafata

10-20-06: Halifax Elementary School • Grade 5 • Halifax, Massachusetts:
The problem is that they don't want to sit with them because the other friends didn't wait for her and left with out her. Delaney

I think the problem is that the girl never should have left. They should have stayed and waited for them. Kevin

The problem was that the girls didn’t want to sit with the girls or the boys because they didn’t wait for them after school. I think the girls should talk to each other and be friends again. Caitlin

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
Stacy is mad at her friends because they left her when they were supposed to wait after school for Stacy. So Stacy thinks they did it on purpose. Samira

I think the problem in this scene is that Stacy's friends left her and Stacy doesn't like it. Tina

I think that they just wanted to set Stacy up. Teresa

10-20-06: St. Stephens Elementary School • Grade 5• Conover, North Carolina:
I think the problem is that one of the kids wants to sit with her other friends but the other friend has been in a fight with the other two and they have a problem. Danielle

The two kids in the scenario are trying to find a place to sit. There are places to sit, but they can't sacrifice their social status, to sit with people that they think are not cool. This is not very friendly behavior. Anna

10-20-06: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that stacy is mad with Kate and Christie because they didn’t wait for her after school. Anonymous

10-20-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is Stacy doesn’t want to forgive Kate and Christie for leaving them at school the day before. Anonymous

I think the problem is that Stacy doesn’t want to sit with Kate and Christie because Kate and Christie offended her in some way. Anonymous

I think Stacy is not talking to her "friends" because it wasn't nice of Kate and Christie is just leave her. Anonymous

10-20-06: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Stacy is angry because Christie and Kate didn't wait for Stacy and I think Christie and Kate got tired of waiting for Stacy and they just left and Stacy really shouldn't keep her anger inside of her she should talk to Christie and Kate to solve her problem. Jessica

Do you think that the girls left Stacy the day before?

10-20-06: EglestonYMCA • Grades 5/6 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
Why did the girls leave her knowing how mad she'll be then think that she will go sit with her after that day? Kalani

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I don't think her friends left her. I think she took a long time. Jadeline

I think that Stacy's friends did not want to leave Stacy on purpose, it's just that maybe Stacy took too long. Mafata

I don't think they left Stacy because they wouldn't have asked her to sit next to them. Ivy

No because she's making a big thing about it because she expects them to wait, but they did not, so she's mad at them. Samira

I think the girls left Stacy because she was taking too long or she was in the wrong place. Tina

10-20-06: Cyrus Pierce Middle School • Grade 6 • Nantucket, Massachusetts:
Kate and Christie should have waited for Stacy. It was not nice to just leave if Stacy was a little late. Sydney

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I think they did it because they didn't want her. Miriani

I do not think that the girls left Stacy because the girls meant to, it is because Stacy took too long. Diana

I think no, because they could have still been inside the school. Teresa

How could Stacy deal with the problem?

10-20-06: St. Stephens Elementary School • Grade 5• Conover, North Carolina:
I think that the first thing they should have done was Stacy talk to them first so that she could know what to do. Nathalie

I think that she should just go over to her friends and just talk it out. I think Stacy should go to her friends and she should start the talk. Jacob

Many schools have problems with groups of friends. There are arguments and misunderstandings. I think Stacy should talk with her friends and maybe a school counselor. Danielle

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
What I thought about this scene is that Stacy should talk to her friends about what she thought. Diana

10-20-06: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that Stacy should really talk to Kate and Christie. Maybe there was misunderstanding. Stacy should forgive Kate and Christie because everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect. Nelsmarie

10-20-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think that Stacy should go talk to Kate and Christie at lunch and with Jez and talk about what’s going on and settle it by not being friends anymore or to try being friends and to fix the problem. Then they could all be friends. Anonymous

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I think that Stacy is right about saying that her friend left her, but she shouldn't take too seriously saying that her friends are not her friends any more. I think that Stacy should deal with the problem by asking her friends “Why did you leave me?” Miriani

I think she should have asked them why they left her behind so she can know why. Jadeline

I think that Stacy should ask her friends why they left her. Mafata

I think Stacy should go to her friends and ask them if they left her. Ivy

She should ask, “Did you leave me?” and if they said yes, I would ask why. Samira

Stacy could have dealt with the problem by going over to them and asking nicely why did they leave her. Tina

10-20-06: Vinalhaven Middle School • Grade 6 • Vinalhaven, Maine:
I think that Stacy should move on and go to talk to Kate and Christy. Joe D.

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
She should deal with this problem by talking to someone about her feelings before it turns into a fight. Diana

I think she needs to tell someone because it might become a big fight. Teresa

If you were Stacy, how would you handle this situation?

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I would have been mad but I still would have asked them whey they left me. Jadeline

10-20-06: EglestonYMCA • Grades 5/6 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I know how Stacy feels. It wasn't right for those girls to leave her. Desi

I would ask why they said that and if they don't have an answer walk away. Kalami

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I would ask whey did they leave me. Mafata

I would go over and ask them before I stop talking to them or not sit next to my friends. Ivy

I would tell them that I was sad that they left me then just explain to them. Samira

I would go over to them and ask them whey they left me and then if they would've told me and said sorry, I would have forgiven them and become friends again. Tina

I would handle this problem by asking them if they left me. Diana

I wouldn't say anything to them. I would just keep on talking to Jez. Teresa

Why do you think Stacy chose to ignore the girls instead of talking it out?

Email your ideas to contact@talkitoutkids.org and we will post them here.

Do you think that Jez should do anything in this situation?

10-20-06: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
Jez should go to were Kate and Christie are sitting and take their part of the situation and bring Stacy, Kate and Christie together and fix the problem before it gets worse. Jasmine

I think that Jez can go to talk with Kate and Christie and see what really happened and go with Stacy and tell her what really happened. When Jez talks with Stacy she can go and talk with Kate and Christie. Margarita

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I think that Jez should just mind her business so she can't get herself into trouble. Mafata

Jez should tell Stacy that she needs to talk to her friends. Ivy

She should do something because if she is trying to be all their friends, she should try to fix the situation. Samira

10-20-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I think Jez could persuade Stacy to go and make up with Kate and Christie. Anonymous

I think Jez should talk to Kate and Christie because maybe Jez can find out what is happening and what the problem is and then she could try to tell Stacy what Kate and Christie said and then try to ask Stacy what she thinks happened and then take them all together and try to work it out then all of them could be friends. Anonymous

10-20-06: Generation Excel • Grades 4-8 • Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts:
I think that Jez should talk Stacy into going over there to talk or work out the situation. Tina

Jez should talk to the girls about what happened the day before to see if they left Stacy. Diana

I think that Jez should keep her mouth shut because Jez is going to get into trouble. Teresa

10-20-06: Fausey School • Grade 5• West Springfield, Massachusetts:
I agree that Jez should not get involved because if she gets involved then it would become her problem too and it wouldn’t make the problem any better. Anonymous

10-20-06: Rising Tide Charter School • Grade 5/6 • Plymouth, Massachusetts:
I think Jez should sit wherever she wants to sit. Meghan

What could any of the girls do to make this situation better?

10-20-06: St. Stephens Elementary School • Grade 5• Conover, North Carolina:
Just to follow up on what Emily said, I think if you talk to another friend it could really help. This other friend might know something about the problem at hand. This friend could also help to clam you down. Anna
