What
is the problem?

I think
the problem is that John and the rest of the group are arguing about
who should be the server in the 4 square game. John doesn't think
the rules are fair. Saskia
I think the problem is that 4 kids are playing 4 square and they
are arguing about who can be the server. I think Megan is right,
but she could use a kinder tone as she talks to John. Anna
I think the four friends playing 4 square cannot get along because
they all want the same thing, to be the server. I think John is
mad because he doesn't get to be the server. It seems as if Steve
always gets to be the server. It seems unfair. Phillip

I think
the problem is that John wants to serve the ball in 4-sqare, but
Steve is serving the ball again, even though he already served yesterday.
I don't think that it's fair because it's John's ball and also,
they should take turns so everybody will get a turn. Kendall

The
problem is that the rules about the four square court aren't fair.
They should have the rule be that the one who gets the ball gets
to serve. Izzy

I think
the problem is that Steve wanted to get to the court first and he
told John that he had to get the ball so he could get to the court
first and he also invited Megan to play because he knew she would
side with him. Mimi
How
could the situation be helped?
10-13-06:
Truro Central School • Grade
5• Truro, Massachusetts:
I think
that even though John is wrong about the rules maybe they could
improvise and give him a turn to be server first, and then Steve,
and Megan and Tracy. Liza
I think
that they should make a "server line-up" similar to a
batting line up so that everyone can take turns. Kyle
I think that they should have a discussion about the rules and maybe
change some of them. For instance, maybe someone else could bring
a ball so that John could be first on the playground and be the
server. Leslie
I think
that it is unfair that John always has to get his ball and can never
be the server. I think they may want to rethink the rules and take
turns. Lindsay
10-13-06:
Touchstone Community School •
Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
I think
that they should tell a teacher about the problem and let the teacher
help solve the problem from there. Ryan
I would
write down all the rules down and have Steve read them and let John
serve sometime. I also think Steve ditched John. Zander
10-13-06:
Neighborhood School • Grade
5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think they should change
the rules so they switch off who serves and that will cool down
the problem. I think there is another problem between Megan and
John It might be just they didn't really like each other from the
beginning. Sebastian
Who
is contributing to the problem?
10-13-06:
Truro Central School • Grade
5• Truro, Massachusetts:
I think
that Megan is contributing to the problem. She is being unpleasant
to John. Sam
I think Tracy is contributing because she is telling John what he
should do with his own ball. She is being a little bit bossy. Courtney
I think that Megan and John are contributing because they keep arguing.
I think they should go with the flow and play the game. Liam
10-13-06:
Touchstone Community School •
Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
I
think that Steve is contributing to the problem by calling server
and not letting other people serve. Megan is making it worse by
saying: "it's fair John!" and helping the problem grow.

I think
that John shouldn't have broken in when Megan and Steve were arguing
over the call because that just made them more mad at him. I also
think that Tracy should know that people's feelings are more important
than just playing the game. Megan should stop being so negative
towards everyone and instead try to understand what they are feeling
and see other people's sides of the problem. Michaela
What
could someone do differently?
10-15-06:
Neighborhood School • Grade

I think I would say to them ''If you're going
to play unfairly, I'm not going to let you guys play with my ball."

I think
John could just let Steve be server, and I think Megan could be
nicer to John and shouldn't call him names. Liza
I think Megan should have used a nicer tone and perhaps things would
have turned out better. Anna
I think that Megan should have been nicer to John instead of just
sticking up for Steve. I think this would have helped the situation.
Etel
I think John got a bit too mad about the situation. Instead of getting
all mad about who is going to be the server, he could get Steve
out right away and be server that way. Liam
I think
that Megan should use a different tone of voice, and John didn't
have to be overdramatic. Leslie

I think
that John should let Steve serve and then tomorrow they could talk
about it and like flip a coin after John comes back with the ball
and that could settle it or the next time they could just let John
be the server or have a rotation! Erin

I think John shouldn't be so defensive about
things. Instead of arguing about the line or in the square situation
they should just call a redo. Maya
10-13-06:
Touchstone Community School •
Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
Instead
of John whining about it he should just let it go, and serve tomorrow.
Erin
I think John should be paitent and wait untill his turn
comes because it will come soon. Taylor
I think
since Steve did it last time he should give John a turn because
he had to get the ball. Izzy

I think
Steve could give John a turn to be the server. I think Megan could
be a little bit nicer to John as well. Diana
I think
that Megan should tell Steve that the rules are kind of unfair because
he was the server first yesterday. It is not fair if Steve gets
to be the server first every day. Etel

If I were Tracy I think that I would just Say "That's it I
am just not playing" I think I would say that because it is
just so childish to keep arguing about who is going to serve, because
by the end of the game most likely everyone will get to serve, so
I would just not want to listen to all those kids just keep on arguing
about such nonsense. Sasha
How
could the problem be solved?
10-13-06:
Truro Central School • Grade
5• Truro, Massachusetts:
I think
since John thinks they are not playing fairly he could have said
time out and they could have talked about it more so that John would
feel better. Diana
I think when Steve said he was server John could have been nicer
in his response and maybe the end result would have been different.
Etel
Instead
of Megan being unkind, and John being sensitive they could have
talked it out and come up with a better plan. Lindsay
I think that Megan and Tracy didn't really care that they weren't
servers. Since Megan and Tracy didn't really want to they could
have stuck up for John in this situation. Liam
I think it would be easier if they all just got along. They could
become better friends, and take turns better. Phillip
They
could play a different game. Maybe football, or swinging, or kickball.

This
whole topic is insane! Meaghan is fighting with John who is mad
at Steve for always getting there first and gets to serve so no
one else does. Tracy is just standing there trying to get on with
the game because recess isn’t that long. I think they should
give the ball to Tracy because she is the only one not fighting
and if John has another hissy fit they should just ignore him and
get someone else to play because with John they can never play with
his whining. They should say sorry, make some rules and get on with
the game. Shauna
What
might
improve things for another day?
10-13-06:
Truro Central School • Grade

I think
they could change the rules a bit. They could rotate who is the
server. Similar to what Kyle said with the "server order".
Sam
I think that one day 1/2 the recess John and Steve could be the
server, and the other 1/2 Megan and Tracy could take turns. Leslie
I think they should flip a coin to decide who is going to be the
server. Lindsay
If they really wanted to they could make new rules that they all
agreed on. Right now John does not agree with the rules. Diana

If I
was ever in a situation when they are fighting over to be server.
I think that they should have a new rule that whoever gets there
first with the ball then they get to be server. Vy
If
there was a line waiting to play the game, I think that the person
waiting to play should call the shot. If there is no line of kids
waiting to play I think that next time they should get a teacher
to see so there will be no conflict. Marissa
I think that one solution that they should try is by letting the
person that gets the ball serve. That way John would stop whining
and everyone would get a chance to serve. Ryan
I think
that everyone should have a chance to be in four square one day
John then the next day Steve and then Meghan and Tracy or what ever
way they way decide to make the order. I think this would help because
every one would get a chance to be four square and there would not
be any fighting. Lindsay

I think
that to solve the problem John could agree on something with Steve,
like maybe having a race to the foursquare court, on rock paper
scissors shoot. Or Steve could give up the ball and give it to John
because Steve did serve last time. It's only fair that Steve lets
another person serve. Sarah

They should talk about what they’re
going to do before recess and say who is going to be server and
when they go outside they know what they’re going to do so
they don't get in a fight. Torrence
They could work things out before recess
instead of fighting or they could try a new game that wouldn't get
them all mad. Maybe they can just play with other people.

I think they should flip a coin to see who serves first. That way
it won't feel like playing favorites. Tania
