The Basketball Game - 10/06/06

Skit Synopsis

Mike, a new kid at school, walks into a basketball game to which he was invited by two different groups of friends.

What is the problem?

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5• Truro, Massachusetts:
I think that Matt and Chris invited him to the game and so did Paul. Mike just arrived at the game and does not know who to sit with. Diana

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Mike comes to the game and both his groups of friends have expected him to sit with them and both groups don't really like each other and once they find out that Mike likes the other group that probably sparked the problem. Sebastian

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
Mike might have said, "yes" to Matt and Chris's invitation at school while his mom said yes to Paul's mom's invitation. Izzy

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5• Truro, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Mike doesn't know who he should sit with because he is friends with all of them, but Matt and Chris don't like Paul. I think it would be hard to choose between the two because you don't want to lose your friends. Phillip

Why might one group of friends not understand spending time with a different group of friends?

10-06-06: Cyrus Pierce Middle School • Grade 6 • Nantucket, Massachusetts:
I think that the problem is that Mike has two sets of friends. He should try to even out the time because he doesn't want any of them to feel left out. Kate

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike got invited to the basketball game by Paul and the other neighborhood kids at the bus stop. Then at school Matt and Chris invited Mike to the basketball game and Mike lied," I can't get a ride" and went to the basketball game hoping he wouldn't see him there. Izzy

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that the problem is that Mike lied to Matt and Chris by telling them that he couldn't go to the game. Then later he agreed to go to the game with Paul. Anonymous

I think that the problem is that Mike lied to Matt and Chris by telling them that he couldn't go to the game. Then later he agreed to go to the game with Paul. Anonymous

I think that Mike was not honest about who he was going with in the first place. He must have told Chris and Matt that he wanted to, but he didn't have a ride. Then he got an invitation from Paul, who he might have liked better or knew better. Anonymous

Why might Mike have not told the truth in this situation?

Email your ideas to contact@talkitoutkids.org and we will post them here.

What could Mike do in this situation?

10-10-06: Swampscott Middle School • Grade 6 • Swampscott, Massachusetts:
Mike would never have had to be in this bad situation of which friend he should sit with if he hadn't lied. Mike should sit with his friends from the bus stop because his other friends were calling Mike’s other friends mean names and telling him who to sit with instead of being a good friend and letting him sit where he chooses and not make a mean comment if he doesn't particularly like it. Shauna

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike shouldn't lie to his friends. What I think Mike should do is go with the person who asked him first or who is a better friend. Alexa

10-06-06: Swampscott Middle School • Grade 6 • Swampscott, Massachusetts:
If I had to choose who to sit with I would have said to Paul, “Sorry but I was sitting with Mike and Chris first and I would sit with him next time.” Lauren

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
If I were Mike I would go to the people who were better friends, not just the people who were "cool.” Katy Joy

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
Well I think that Mike could be friends with two different groups, but not if one friend called the other group of friends losers. Mike should just go sit with the group of friends he originally wanted to sit with. Philip

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5• Truro, Massachusetts:
If I were Mike and they were calling my friends "losers" I would sit with Paul. Kyle

Because Matt and Chris don't like Paul, and if Mike sits with him maybe they will think Mike is a loser as well. I think it is a difficult situation for Mike. Phillip

10-06-06: Cyrus Pierce Middle School • Grade 6 • Nantucket, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike should sit with Paul and not with those mean kids who called Paul a loser because if he sits with them now, they will always make fun of Paul and Mike's other friends. Kendall

I think that by calling Mike's friends "losers" Mike might not want to sit with Chris and Matt. And he'll sit with his other friends. Erin

I think it was really mean that he was calling his friends' friends "losers" because he probably knew he was friends with them. Phillip

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike said that Paul was the first to ask him to the game and that he is going with Paul and that he thinks Paul is really nice and not a loser. Mimi

10-06-06: Cyrus Pierce Middle School • Grade 6 • Nantucket, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike should go sit with the other group because I would not want to sit with the people that called the other group losers. The group that called the other group losers they are the losers. I would not want to be friends with them no more. John

What could Mike say to Matt and Chris?

10-13-06: Central Park East II School • Grade 5 • New York, New York:
I would tell Matt and Chris that they were losers if they called other people losers. And I would go sit by myself and whoever wanted to come sit with me could. Phoebe

What I would do is say to Matt & Chris is, "Can you please stop teasing them or else I will sit with Paul." Giovanni

I'd say, "Stop teasing the other kids, or I won't be your friend." Daniel

If I was Mike I would tell them - don't call them losers because you could be a loser and they can tease you, but you don't tease my friends! Ayana

My best friend is short, but that does not mean anything. I will say, "Do not say that to my best friend! And just because she is short dosen't mean anything. OK, so can you stop!" Kristal

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I would say that if you guys don't like them maybe you should give them a chance and see what they are like and if they're nice maybe you could hang out with them. Lindsay

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike should stand up for his friend and say that Paul isn't a loser and that he can't be friends with them if they don't respect his other friend or get Matt to tell him why he think he's a loser. Anonymous

I think Mike should say to Matt and Chris to not call Paul and his friends losers. I don't think they know anything about Paul and his friends. Paul should also say "If you’re going to call my other friends losers, I am not going to talk to you any more." Molly

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
If someone called my friends losers I would stand up and say, "They aren't losers. You can call me a loser but you can't call my friends losers!" Izzy

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike should sit with all of his friends. Mike should prove to Matt that his friends aren't losers and say all the good things about Paul so they might like Paul better. That way they could all make friends. Tania

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think I would say if you two can't get along then I'm just going to leave because I don't want to be part of a huge conflict. I think it would be a very difficult situation for Mike to be in, especially as the new kid. Sam

What could make the situation better?

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
If I were Mike, I would ask both groups of friends if they wanted to sit together. Taylor

I agree with Tommy from Swampscott. Mike should sit with both groups of friends. Izzy

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that you can be friends with two different groups of friends. Jacob

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think Mike should sit with Matt and Chris for one half and with Paul the other half. Courtney

I think Mike should talk to them and he should sit with Matt and Chris for half of the game, and with Paul for the other half. If that doesn't work I think they should all sit together and try to work it out. Leslie

10-06-06: Touchstone Community School • Grade 5/6 • Grafton, Massachusetts:
Someone said that Mike should sit with Chris and Paul because he was sitting with them first and I disagree because he said to that group of friends he couldn't get a ride. I think he should be able to sit with the friends he wants to. Phil

10-06-06: Swampscott Middle School • Grade 6 • Swampscott, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike should go ask his other friends to sit with him on his left side and have Mike and Chris sit with him on the right so he could sit with them all. Also Mike might be able to make Chris and Mike and his other friends to all be friends. TJ

10-06-06: Neighborhood School • Grade 5/6 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think that the downside of trying to get Matt, Chris, and Paul to sit together would be that Mike would first have to explain everything that had happened and that would make them take time off of watching the basketball game. If Mike spent half the time with Paul and half with Matt and Chris they would have all been able to watch the game and afterwards they could talk about the problem and Mike could explain why he had lied to Matt and Chris. Michaela

10-10-06: Swampscott Middle School • Grade 6 • Swampscott, Massachusetts:
I think that he should sit with Matt and Chris because they asked him first. Also, he should sit with Paul next time, just to be fair to both groups. Ryan

How do you decide what to do when you have competing invitations?

10-06-06: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I would call my friend and tell him I got another invitation. I would try to arrange spending half of the game with each group of friends, or that I would go to the next game with them. Courtney
