What
is the problem?
05-12-06:
Truro Central School • Grade
5• Truro, Massachusetts:
I think that the problem is that Mike
has to decide between two friends, and that is difficult. Roland
I think
that the problem is that Mike is stuck between watching the basketball
game with two different sets of friends. If he sits with one set
of friends, the other set may get mad at him. Gary

Dennett Elementary School
• Grade 5 • Plympton, Massachusetts:
Mike
came with the boys who Matt said were losers but Matt didn't know
and thought Mike came to sit with them. Anna
Matt
and Chris are calling Paul a loser and pressuring Mike and telling
him not to sit with Paul. Connor

I think the problem is that Mike doesn't know which of his friends
he should sit with. Matt and Chris think that Paul is a "loser",
and I think that if Matt and Chris can't really accept that he is
friendly with Paul then they are not really that good of friends.

What
could make the situation better?
05-12-06:
Dennett Elementary School
• Grade 5 • Plympton, Massachusetts:
Mike
could tell the other kids that he is rooting for his school and
that he does not want to root for his old school. The other kids
are from his old school. Beth
Mike could tell them that for some of the game they could sit with
Paul and some of the game with Matt. Shelbie
I think
that he should go sit with different people instead of splitting
the time up and it will be easier. Tom
I think
Mike should say if you call them losers I'll go sit with them. Melanie
I think Mike should tell Matt and Chris that Paul isn't a loser
and maybe by the end of the game they will change their mind. Connor

I think the situation could be made better by saying to them I don't
really care if you guys are friends, but I don't want you making
fun of each other because I want to be friends with both of you.

Wildwood Elementary School
• Grade 5 • Amherst, Massachusetts:
I think that Mike
should tell Matt and Chris that he doesn't appreciate it when they
call his other friends losers, and that he wants to be friends with
them but if they can't deal with the fact that he will also be friends
with Paul, then their friendship won't work out. Also at the basketball
game he could tell Paul and whoever is with Paul to come down and
sit with Matt and Chris. If Paul doesn't want to come and sit with
Matt and Chris then Mike should sit with whoever invited him to
the game first. Katherine

I think Mike could
try to get both groups of friends together. Gary
I
think that Mike made his original plans with Paul. When he got there
he ran into Matt and Chris as well. He could have said I already
have plans with Paul, would you like to join us? Gina

I think that matt, mike, and chris should talk about which one he
should sit with and say he will sit with one of them next time the
next game. brittany

Dennett Elementary School
• Grade 5 • Plympton, Massachusetts:
Matt did not know that Mike would go to the game and so he should
just leave the situation and say a fib and say "I got to do
some homework." MacKenzie
How
do you decide what to do when you have competing invitations?
05-12-06:
Dennett Elementary School
• Grade 5 • Plympton, Massachusetts:
I have
had to do that. I had a choice that I could go to my Grandpa’s
Birthday and meeting family that I have not met. Or going to Maine
with my friend Melanie. I chose my family because they were looking
forward to seeing me, but it was hard. Beth
I would
go with one friend this time and go with the other next time. Morgan
I would say I am going by myself. Chris
You could invite both groups to go together or if they're not friends
you could plan with one friend to go to a different thing at a different
time. Anna

If that
happened to me I would try to go to both and spend half time at
each. Tessa

Wildwood Elementary School

I would
go with whoever invited me first. If someone invited me second,
I would just say, "Sorry, I'm busy, maybe some other time."
Anonymous
I would ask both my friends if they knew each other and wanted to
go together and if they didn't know each other then I would tell
the second friend that I am busy and will go later. Anonymous
