The Pick-Up Game - 03/16/07 and 03/23/07

Skit Synopsis
Several kids are playing a pick-up game of basketball at a local gym when another kid from the neighborhood arrives and wants to join the game.

What is the problem?

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
What I think the problem is that Steve and the team won’t let Ryan play in the game. Courtney

I think the problem is that Steve and his friends were being unfair because even though Ryan was late I think that they should still let him play or they should at least have a sub so that everyone that would like to play can. Leslie

The problem is that Steve and the rest of the basketball team won’t let Ryan play with them. I think that the team should let Ryan go in even though he was late. I think it was rude that Steve took Ryan’s place. Charlotte

I think that the problem in the Talk it Out Kids skit is that Steve and his friends will not let Ryan play in the game. I do agree that it would only be fair if the teams were equal, but everyone should be allowed to play. When Ryan brought someone else to play on the other team, he still was not let in the game. Anonymous

I think the problem is that Steve and Ryan are friends and Steve told Ryan to come to the game not telling him that he would be playing. Then when he got there they wouldn’t let him play because the teams would be uneven and that wouldn’t be fair. Emma

The problem is that Steve promised to Ryan that he could play if he could make the teams even, but he did not keep his promise. Steve was not in charge of that decision, and he should not have made a promise he could not keep. Anonymous

03-23-07: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
The problem is that the players don't want to let Ryan play. Billy Bob Jr.

The problem is that when they said that he needed another player they just said that so he won't feel bad for him. Brian

I think the problem is that Ryan who got to a basketball late wants to play but he can't because the teams won't be fair, so they tell him to wait for another player so the teams will be even and he finds another person but they still don't want him to play. Janisel

The problem is that Ryan went to a basketball court and saw his friend Steve. Then Ryan asked Steve can I play. Then Steve said then it is going to be 5 to 4. Ryan said I'm going to get a player. When he got it they said sorry the game is ending. Alex

I think that the problem is that Ryan wants to join the game but he can’t because there will be more kids than the kids that are in the other team. Margarita

I think that the problem is that the kids don't want Ryan to play the pick-up game. Maybe that is why the first time he tried they said the teams would be uneven, and the second time they said that there was a little time left so he would not be able to play. Caroline

The problem is that the other players that Steve is playing with are saying that Ryan and his, "Buddie" can't play. Elvis

03-23-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Steve and his friends are playing in a basketball game. Ryan wasn't invited to play and he feels left out. Anna

03-23-07: St. Joseph School • Grade 5/6 • Haverhill, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Ryan can't play because there isn't enough people and he found someone else but they denied the other person. Erin

03-26-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think that the problem is that Steve won't let Ryan play in the game because there are enough people. When Ryan finds another player they still won't let him play. Etel

What do you think Ryan was feeling?

03-23-07: St. Joseph School • Grade 5/6 • Haverhill, Massachusetts:
I think he felt letdown and disappointed. Anonymous

03-23-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think Ryan would feel really sad. Especially since he ran all around to find a partner to make the teams even. Emma

I think Ryan would feel disappointed because he had to sit and watch his friends play. Also, I think Ryan might feel a little mad at Steve because he wouldn't let him play. Sam

03-23-07: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
I think the problem is that Ryan is a little annoyed that he couldn't go play basketball even though he brought another player. Bob

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
Ryan feels left out because he can’t play in the game, until he gets another player to play in the game but when Ryan gets another player the people playing with Steve say come on Steve and he says sorry Ryan. Ryan doesn’t get to play in the game. He feels like his friends don’t want him to play and that he’s not good enough to play. Next time maybe they can all play and get another player so the teams would be even. Lindsay

I think Ryan is feeling really sad and upset. That’s how I would feel if my friends wouldn’t let me play a game. Courtney

I think that Ryan was probably sad and feeling excluded. Ryan is sad because Steve said he could go in once another person on the other team went in. When the new player went in, Steve took his place. Charlotte

I think that Steven should have called Ryan right when he had found out that they could get a court even if it took away some playing time because I think that Ryan just might be a little left out because they don’t want him to play so that the teams would be fair. But I don’t think that Ryan really wanted to go look for someone to play. I think he’d rather go home or do something else than stand and watch his friends play without him and I know that I would never want to just sit there and watch some of my friends play basketball. I would really feel disappointed that I had to just sit there on the sidelines and watch them finish up their game. Sam

What do you think Steve was feeling?

03-23-07: St. Joseph School • Grade 5/6 • Haverhill, Massachusetts:
I think Steve wanted Ryan to play but the other players didn't because the teams would be unfair. I also think Steve had some peer pressure on him. Jameson

Steve wanted Ryan to play but he also wanted to go with the other players. If I was Steve, at first I wouldn't let Ryan play because the teams wouldn't have been fair but at the end I would let him play because he brought another player. Nick

Steve is not allowing Ryan to play. I think that Steve is being a follower and is trying to be friends with the popular kids. Anonymous

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think Steve was feeling sort of mad that Ryan wanted to play. Courtney

And Steve who didn’t even care that his friend Ryan was feeling left out. Steve excluded Ryan and the people on the court or in the background was just like “Come on Steve we only have 20 minutes let’s go”. That was very hurtful to Ryan and Steve and the people on the court should apologize. Leslie

Why do you think the boys didn't let Ryan join the game?

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think why the boys didn’t let Ryan play the game maybe because he’s not as good as the other boys or maybe he doesn’t know how to play. Courtney

03-23-07: St. Joseph School • Grade 5/6 • Haverhill, Massachusetts:
I think Ryan wanted to play and Steve wanted him to play as well but players 1 and 2 didn't want him to because they felt the teams would be uneven. Sean

03-23-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I don't think it was very fair to Ryan to say he couldn't play. Especially because he found a partner and it would have made the teams fair. Sam

03-23-07: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
The problem is that the other kids on the team don't want Ryan to play because of how he shoots or just because they don't like him. Janisel

I think the problem is that Ryan would like to play but Steve, player 1 and 2 don't want him to play probably because they think Ryan is a bad player. Jessica

03-26-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think the boys don't want him to play because he isn't very good and maybe everyone besides Steve doesn't like him that much. Sam Mc

I think that the problem is that player one and two won't let Ryan play, not because he is bad, it said he had a good outside shot, but maybe because Ryan did something. Anonymous

What could Ryan have done to make the situation better?

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
If I was Ryan to make the situation better Ryan should ask if he could play later that’s what I would do. The words Ryan could use are, “Can I play? I’m not the best but could I try for a little bit?” Courtney

03-23-07: St. Joseph School • Grade 5/6 • Haverhill, Massachusetts:
I definitely don't think Ryan should show any violence but should try to talk to Steve and the other players and work things out. Anonymous

03-23-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think Ryan could say to Steve, "Come on Steve you said I could play if I found another player. At least try to talk them into it." I think Steve could at least try. Liam

What could Steve have done to make the situation better?

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think an apology would work by if Steve would say I’m here you could have my turn for I little bit of time. Courtney

03-23-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
I think Steve could either let Ryan play instead of him and then they could take turns so that the teams would stay fair. Sam

I think it would be hard to go against the group maybe because there are more kids around and Steve might have felt pressured, and he probably wanted to play and hang around with his friends. Liam

What could any of the kids have done to make the situation better?

03-19-07: Truro Central School • Grade 5 • Truro, Massachusetts:
The way the kids could solve this dilemma is by one of them giving up their turn and letting Ryan have a turn. Courtney

For instance, if Ryan subbed for a while like for five minutes then who ever was on the court that was tired could just say, “hey guys I think that I need a rest, Ryan you can go in for me.” That is what we do in basketball practice. Leslie

But I think that they should have him sit out and then if another player got tired Ryan would be in the game then when another person was tired the person who was just out would go in and the tired one would sit out and so on. That’s what we do on our basketball practices. Emma

I think Steve and the team will let Ryan and I think they should let him because everybody should have a turn to play and it’s not fair if only some kids get to play and others don’t. Things might improve for another day are Ryan could have a turn some other day. Courtney

03-23-07: Blue Hill Boys & Girls Club • Ages 10-12 • Dorchester, Massachusetts:
I think that Ryan should be able to play in the basketball game because Ryan should have the right to play basketball with his friend. Myanna

I think Ryan should play in the game because it's not his friend’s game. Francys

If my friend went without calling then I would accept the fact that he did not call me. But I thought that he was a good friend he would let me play the game I would feel depressed & I know that if my friend was really my friend then he/she would let me play because everyone should be able to play and not feel left out/depressed/sad. Melanie

03-23-07: St. Joseph School • Grade 5/6 • Haverhill, Massachusetts:
I think that person didn’t have a right because it seemed like he was taking charge and just saying no he can’t play. Anonymous

I think they should have alternated then it would be fair and just as fun. And you might make a new friend! Katie

I think anyone that wants to join a game should get to. You shouldn't exclude anyone no matter what. If there was uneven teams they could sub people. Anonymous

03-23-07: Hennigan School • Grade 5 • Boston, Massachusetts:
A solution for this is Ryan to leave and not be friends with Steve unless Steve stands up for Ryan. Elvis

Maybe Ryan can show off his skills in front of them and make them feel like they really need him and if they ask him to come in and play say straight out NO. Jessica

A solution is Ryan should just watch. Billy Bob Jr.
