What
is the problem?

The problem is that Steve
and his friends didn't let Ryan play.

Steve
is mean and he told Ryan that if he gets someone else then he can
play.

The problem in the story is Steven and his
team think the teams won't be even so they won't let Ryan play.

I think that the problem is that Steven
is trying to let Ryan play but the kids don't want him to play because
it would be unfair teams. Andrew

I think it is important to have the same number
of kids in a team because when they play it will be easier to let
every kid on the team play. Anonymous
I think it’s important to have
the same amount of players because if there were more than one it
wouldn't be fair and the team with more players would probably win,
and that wouldn't be fair. Anonymous
Why
do you think the boys didn't let Ryan join the game?

Corners School • Grade 4/5 • Greenfield, Massachusetts:
I
think that Steven told Ryan to go get someone else because he wanted
to just get rid of him. Andrew

I
think the others did not like Ryan because they did not call him
and did not let him in even with a new person, Ryan could not play
and it was mean.

I think
that the kids didn't really want Ryan to play in the game because
even when Ryan came back with another player they still didn't let
him play. Bryan
What
do you think Ryan was feeling?

Four Corners School • Grade

I think
Ryan might be sad 'cause he got someone, but they still won’t
let him play even if the teams would be even. Alexis

I think
Ryan felt sad and the other kids did not like him and Steve did
not help him get in and someone could've sat out. Anonymous
What
could Ryan have done to make the situation better?

I think
if Ryan stood up for himself instead of walking away, Steve and
his friends would've probably let Ryan and his friend play. Anonymous
What
do you think Steve was feeling?

Bowman
School • Grade 5 • Lexington, Massachusetts:
I think
that Steve wanted to let Ryan play, but when his teammates didn't
want Ryan to play, Steve listened to his teammates.
I
also think that Steve was embarrassed to say to his teammates that
he wanted Ryan to play when they didn't want him to play.

I
think that Steve wanted Ryan to play on his team, but the plan didn't
work out. I think that later Steve will apologize to Ryan, but Ryan
won't care because the game is over. Steve will promise that next
time Ryan can play. Anindita

What
could Steve have done to make the situation better?
02-09-07:
Four
Corners School • Grade 4/5 • Greenfield, Massachusetts:
Steve should have said why
it'll be a fair game if Ryan and the person that he brought played
because they will both be added to each team.
If
he agreed with the other players in the basketball game he should
just say maybe next time, or tomorrow you and me will grab some
different players from the neighborhood and make our own game. Jack
What
could any of the kids do to solve this dilemma?
02-09-07:
C.S. 211 • Grade 5 • Bronx, New York:
I
think they should let Ryan play because he got another player. Stephanie

I think
a solution could be that they swap kids in and out of the game so
they could share. Anonymous

Four

I think
the solution would be that it would be better if they let Ryan play
but if they do another pick-up game with some different friends
then they could let anybody who wants to play, play. Jake
What
might improve things for another day?
02-09-07:
Four
Corners School • Grade 4/5 • Greenfield, Massachusetts:
Probably
before they start the game they should wait until everybody gets
there and then make teams and then switch off and then it will be
fair for everybody. Julia
